Big Laurel is grateful to countless volunteers who work with us -- beginning with the construction of the first school house in 1976 by the local community.

:: Volunteer Groups
One weekend each October students from Charleston Catholich High School and Wheeling Jesuit University help cut firewood for the winter.

A number of organizations come to Big Laurel annually to help in a work camp or with a summer camp. Organizations supporting Big Laurel include:

High Schools Church Groups
  • St. Aloysius Parish - Bowling Green, OH
  • St. Ignatius - Bel Air, MD

pressure and stress. Do you enjoy working outdoors on the land, playing, hiking, praying, reflecting, reading, creating, resting, being with children, building relationships, and living in community. Come for a week, a month, a summer, a year. Are you willing to cook, build, teach, or garden? There are private accomodations, free room and board, plus a negotiated stipend.

Because of multiple commitments, it is important for volunteers to schedule visits by contacting Big Laurel or the Web of Life beforehand.

Other Forms of Support

The work of the Sisters is made possible by the support of the congregations of Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, Sisters of St. Joseph of Wheeling, the Franciscan Sisters of Stella Niagara, New York and of Tiffin, Ohio.

Our Americorps*VISTA position is supported through Step by Step, a nonprofit organization that works in West Virginia's southern coalfields.

Those who participate in our mission by giving money, gifts, assistance and prayer support are an intrinsic part of Big Laurel. You sow the strength we travel by.

:: Sponsorship
As a sponsor you will make it possible for children and young people to participate in the camps and the programs at Big Laurel. Most of the children we serve are in need of financial assistance.

  • $100 will sponsor a WV youngster for summer camp. $25 or $50 can be used toward a partial scholarship.
  • $100 will sponsor a volunteer for a week. $400 will sponsor a volunteer for a month.

:: Marrowbone Community Food Pantry Donations
If you can support the pantry with a donation of money or food, we welcome your help. You may even give us a pledge of a monthly donation.

*All contributions are tax deductible.
