| Our Facilities: Web of Life Ecology Center
One mile from Big Laurel are the Web of Life Ecology Center and the Knob. The Ecology Center is used for many different programs and activities. At Big Laurel we strive to live sustainably with the land, and at the Ecology Center we have created many facilities to act as models for sustainability.
Water collection
One of the main problems facing Big Laurel and the surrounding community is a lack of accessible water. On all buildings nonpotable rainwater is collected by gutters, which run the water into cisterns. |
Wetlands
After the water is used, the grey water runs into a wetland. The plants in the wetland area filter the water making it clean. |
Composting Toilets
Another way we conserve water is using composting toilets. |
Outdoor Showers
During warmer weather outdoor showers, which line one side of the ecology center, are available for volunteers and campers. |
Composting
At every program we teach children the importance of not wasting food. We also compost food scraps and teach how nutrients are recycled in a healthy ecosystem. Beside our composting station is a goat barn. Last year we uses goats as a sustainable way to remove invasive species, like multiflora rose, from the woods. |
Woodworking Shop
Many of our programs include a woodworking activity. Participants learn safety and skills in our woodworking shop. |
